Blogging with my Style Me friends again! Today is one of my favorite topics – BOOKS! Truthfully, I have a deep love of books. Seeing them on the shelf, holding them, opening the cover, turning page after page…it never gets old to me. I love to own books. Sometimes I’m a better book owner than book reader though. I say that only because I never seem to finish all the books I have on my list. I have quite a few favorites in various genres but today I want to share a few books that really helped to give me a paradigm shift in many ways.
The first book that stopped me in my tracks and made me think about how I live and how it affects others around the globe. 7: A Mutiny on Excess by Jen Hatmaker. Actually, this book forced me to think about using a Kindle or Nook instead of paper copies. I do own a Nook and I use but I still love the feel of an actual book in my hands. I’m old school in that area, friends!
This book made me look at 7 topics very differently then I had ever in my life. 7 is a diary type read and Jen is real and totally funny. Love her style even when she hits me hard in the heart.
Another book that is in the same vein is More of Less by Jeff Shinabarger. This book follows along the same lines as 7 to address the excess of life and how to deal with and how to live wisely amongst excess. Honestly, one of my goals this year is to give away things I own to people I know that need things. Like dishes…I have way too many of them and with just two people in our household I don’t need all I have. I have them because I want them not because I need them. Big difference between wants and needs, friends!
Another favorite read which I recently finished, is Love, Skip, Jump by Shelene Bryan. This book is in the same vein of evaluating how I live especially when compared to so many across the globe with so little. Truly, I may not be wealthy by American standards but by worldly standards I live in extremely luxury. Because I am aware of this, I now have to make decisions on how I live from an entire different perspective.
Top three favorite reads that gave me a paradigm shift. Please know I am far from embracing major points in these reads but I am aware and I hope as I continue to roll out of my warm comfortable bed each day I will begin to make choices based on others and not just myself.
Have a lovely weekend!
