What do we all need in the middle of winter? A vacation to some place warm…or at least a min-vaca to some place warm. My hubby and I were able to slip away to Gulf Shores, Alabama for a few days in early February. We had the opportunity to meet up with some friends from my growing up years in Iowa which made it a special time.
My friend Jody and her husband Kevin traveled to Gulf Shores with her son, daughter-in-law and grandson to spend time with her parents and other relatives that go there every year to escape the dreaded Iowa winter. Since they do this yearly and we discussed it over Christmas, my hubby and I decided it would be fun to meet up with all of the there. And it was great to see them!
One thing I love about my hubby is that he knows how to relax on a vaca. He isn’t pressured by time and schedules and a lot of touristy things. For me, I’m a scheduled person and it’s hard for me to not accomplish or tackle something every.single.day. Gulf Shores brought it front and center that I need to relax. Guess what? I {we} did!
We saw a few sights, ate some good food and spent time with people that have been dear to me for years.
What did we see? Well, we went out on a pier and saw these pelicans.
You could get so close to them as they waited to be fed by fishermen. I wanted to touch one but then I saw the little hook on their bills and decided that was a bad idea.
We did spend a little time at the beach but this cold-natured girl was not venturing into the water. Brrrr….
We also visited the USS Alabama, a docked battleship at Mobile. Being a previous history teacher I totally love historical sights. So does my hubby and he was the photographer that day {mostly}.
We went through the inside to every level that opens {about 3 or 4 decks}. Then we went out on deck and went as high as we could.
Being up high is typically a challenge for me but I didn’t freak out at all that day. Win!
We saw lots of cool flags inside the ship as we went through on self-guided tour.
Of course there were pictures of airplanes. War birds are my hubby’s favorite. I admit that I love them too!
What we ate. Breakfast at the hotel of course plus a little Starbucks run was the typical morning before venturing out to see some sights.
Our first dinner meal was at a local seafood place. The only good about that meal was this soup. They called is Swamp Soup, which creeped me out a little but it was delicious.
We did have some great burgers though. The company was delightful. I cannot tell you how much I love these people!
One great photo before heading out for burgers.
Had some fun, saw people I love and then we drove home. This was the view for much of the trip home.
Little trips are refreshing and we are glad we went. Unfortunately, I got sick when I got back home. Bummer! Have you had any little vacas this winter? Where did you go?
Have a great week!
