Role Models & the Fierce Movement

Hello there, friends! I imagine that a few of you might have a holiday today. Wish I did but nope, I’m at work. If you’re off, I hope it’s a fun day that you truly enjoy.

I’m linking up with The Blended Blog today and sharing some role models in my life. But there is more than just one thing going on in this post today because it is officially the 50th day of the year. This means it a day to celebrate bloggers in the 50’s age bracket {#foreverfierce}. There are definitely some role models there too!

But first, I want to share a little about the people who were great role models for me in my life. The most important and influential were my parents and maternal grandparents.

First up are my parents. They were married for 61 years last December. I took this picture of them when I was home last September having the best time ever with them.

This is their wedding day. Aren’t they just adorable?

My parents taught me lots of things and they also just modeled things in front of me so I knew what was good and right. Things like:

  • be honest
  • be hard-working
  • be loyal
  • be faithful
  • pay your debts
  • save money
  • make family a priority
  • show up for your kids
  • invest in your kid’s future
  • do things for others
  • take care of those in need
  • faith in God is important

The other big influence in my life was my mom’s parents. Fortunately, I was able to spend lots of time with them growing up. By the time they had both passed away, they were married for 72 years. I don’t have a digital photo of both, but this is Grandma Mar, as we called her with great affection.

  • be hard-working and always keep a job
  • be busy
  • don’t be wasteful
  • enjoy a hobby
  • take care of your family
  • your family is your legacy
  • heritage is important
  • a good name is better than riches
  • be generous

Honestly, these little lists do not even scratch the surface of the influence these people have had on my life and the lists just overlap because these people had the same values and lived every single day. What I learned from my parents, I also learned from my grandparents and vice versa. I was blessed beyond words!

And then we come to today, which is the 50th day of the year. Last year one blogger decided a day would be set aside to recognize and celebrate bloggers 50 years and older. The Fierce Movement began last year and has been gaining momentum ever since. Today is Forever Fierce Day {#foreverfierce}. I hope you’ll celebrate with those of us over 50 who have decided that we are definitely not dead yet and are embracing our age and stage of life. Catherine who blogs at Catherine Grace O is the brain child of this movement. I hope you stop by her blog. I’m sharing five bloggers who have influenced me and ones I try to read on a regular basis. They are all fabulous!

My New Happy is written by my dear friend, Lana. I love her gentle voice and sincere words. She is low-key and always concerned about those she loves. She is the same on her blog as in real life. Big hugs to her!

Two Teens And Their Mama

Once Upon a Time and Happily Ever After is written by my friend Leslie. I “met” Leslie through a style challenge several years ago. Leslie is fun and creative as well as an avid reader. I love her book reviews. Big hugs, Leslie.

Elegantly Dressed and Stylish is written by Jess. I have followed her for a couple of years. Her style continues to get gorgeous all the time. I adore her little doggies and her fun life. Big hugs, Jess.

Jodie’s Touch of Style is written by Jodie. I love her blog because she incorporates her family and styles for ladies ages 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. She is unique in this premise and I adore her bold voice to always give a fresh perspective. Big hugs, Jodie.

Chic over 5o is written by Shauna. Oh my goodness, she has the best style. She is always gorgeous and bold. She reminds me that we don’t have to stop living because we are over 50. Big hugs, Shauna.

  • Loved getting to ready about your role models and the life ideals that they taught you. Oh, if only everyone still taught these same values what a wonderful world it would be! You are certainly not dead, Sista! Enjoy your fierce day!!
    • I was so blessed! They are good people for sure!
  • Yes, our parents are such an influence on our lives, hopefully for the better! Your parents and grandparents taught you some really good lessons Carrie! I love the list of women over 50 that you shared! I know a few but some are new to me. I'll have to check them out!

  • Wow, that is amazing that your parents have been married for 61 years, and your grandparents hit the 72 year mark in their lifetimes. What a wonderful thing that you have been able to see such a good example of strong marriages! I can only hope that my husband and I can do that for our kids! I love that you shared some of the lessons learned from them as well--so many memorable, important things.
    • The marriages have been a stabilizing factor in our family at large. I'm so thankful for my practical and down to earth Midwest heritage.
  • Aww...thank you so much friend. I really appreciate the mention. Your parents sound like such good role models - so important in our lives.
    • Of course, sweet friend! Love having you in my life.
  • Sounds like your parents and grandparents shared some great knowledge/insights/life lessons
  • Oh, my gravy!!! I am so honored to be mentioned among these other wonderful ladies and in a post about your dear, sweet parents and grandparents. Your mom and dad look so much the same now as they did on their wedding day. And so glad your maternal grandparents were a big part of your life. We always lived across country from my grandmothers so rarely saw them, and never met either grandfather. I appreciate the person you are and the life lessons you learned from these fine examples. Just imagine how much better our country, our world would be if everyone just worked hard, was honest and loyal, helped when they could, and made family and God a priority. Thank you so much, sweet, sweet Carrie, for this lovely post.
