Winter Seasonal Capsule

After the purging, I decided to commit myself to a seasonal capsule. I’m living in my Winter Capsule Wardrobe for January-March. I decided that March is so transitional that it’s like September and makes me crazy so I’m just putting it in winter. If I need to adjust accordingly I will in that moment. For right now, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

My capsule is my own and doesn’t follow the typical rules. I’ve been inspired by the 30 x 30 and 20 x 30 capsule remixes. Project 333 has also inspired me along the way too, but in the end I just decided I would create it my own way with my own pieces. Friends, there is freedom to make a capsule your own so don’t let that word “capsule” become constricting to you, but allow it to motivate you to be creative with your pieces.

After my purge of fall and winter pieces, I still have more than an ample supply of pieces to create a capsule for me and at least one {or more} friend or neighbor. Again, I’m going to make it work. I’ll re-evaluate at the end of March.

Here’s my stats on the main pieces of my Winter Seasonal Capsule:

  • 25 blouses
  • 25 sweaters
  • 12 pairs of jeans
  • 15 vests & jackets
  • 10+ various tees {short & long-sleeved)
  • a few skirts & dresses

Please take a breath! Please don’t hyperventilate at my over populous capsule. It’s a work in progress and will most likely be less by the end of March. These are the main bones that I have left after letting pieces go. I didn’t include shoes/boots or scarves at this time. At this time, I’m basically wearing one pair of shoes and one pair of booties but I do have a few pairs of shoes I’m still thinking about letting go by the end of the season. We’ll see.

I hope this encourages you to consider beginning your own capsule. It doesn’t have to be exact and it can be a work in progress. I really believe you can make it your own by using your own inspiration from other capsule wardrobes out there. I’ve made a Pinterest board that I hope will inspire you too!

Thanks for tuning in today, friends!

  • Happy New Year! Look forward to the outfits you create with those pieces. I'm sure it will look creative and fabulous. xo Sheree http://poshclassymom.com IG: @poshclassymom
    • Happy New Year to you, Sheree! Yes, I'm all in for a creative and fabulous year! Thanks so much for stopping by! Hope you're year is off to a beautiful beginning!
  • I really need to organize my closet so it looks pretty. Maybe I will try those hangers everyone was talking about. But I also like your wooden ones.
    • Wooden hangers are the best in my opinion. It changed the way I looked at my clothes so much.

I like that you didn't limit yourself to the 33 items. I have started a winter capsule also and have about 50 items. It stressed me to only have a specific number. I put it on one rack in my closet and it makes getting dressed a lot easier. Also went to the Cladwell site. It's very nice. Thank you for your inspiring blog!
    • Good for you! I really believe we can make a capsule our own and through that there will most likely be a reduction of pieces naturally, which is so much better than being forced. Glad you were inspired! That is super encouraging to me. Hope you new year is off to a fabulous beginning!
  • I have 100 hangers so I am limiting myself to that many hanging pieces. If I buy something new then something else has to go. I purged quite a few tshirts/tops too. I folded everything using the KonMari method so if the drawer is full then, again, something has to go! I've loved your outfits in 2015. Can't wait to see what you come up with with your capsule!
    • Good plan! I hope my capsule will be inspiring! I'm feeling especially creative and inspired these days!

A capsule is a personal thing. Rather than the number of pieces in your capsule, I think the more important thing is whether you love them and wear them. I'm not counting my shoes and accessories, or coats in mine, although I have purged and limited their number as well. I probably have 40 pieces hanging, and maybe 10 sweaters and tees folded on my closet shelf. It is really working for me! Can't wait to see your outfits!
    • You are doing so well, Saxon! I'm excited for your progress and focus! Knowing that it is working well for you is really an encouragement to me. Thanks so much for sharing!
  • I love your winter capsule and that you're starting with larger numbers. That's kind of my philosophy right now too--I'm no longer "officially" doing a capsule but I'm trying to build my closet intentionally and only hold on to pieces I love. I can't wait to see how you remix these items!
    • Thanks, Shea! I think it's helping me to start with larger numbers. I feel less constricted/deprived. Plus I'm working on doing a sorting through what I have kept but maybe don't actually love. Thanks for your encouragement!

You have always done a great job with your capsules before so I am looking forward to this one too. It is good to start big and trim some each day. I need to do more closet purging. Cheers to a better 2016!
    • Thanks, Ada! You can do it friend. A little purging is good for all of us! Happy New Year to you!

love this!! you do have a huge winter wardrobe lol can't wait to see some looks put together! Confessions of a Frumpy Mommy
    • I do! I confess that is so true. It's really a mix of fall/winter but I'm calling it winter and focusing on a winter season. I hope it all comes together. So far I'm loving getting dressed each morning and that is a super plus!
  • This capsule idea is new to me but I am very interested. When you say you have 25 blouses in the winter capsule, are those blouses you wear only in the winter? For example, flannel. Do you put off-season clothing elsewhere (another closet, dresser)? I tried that but really like having everything in one place so I can see what I have. Where can I learn more about capsules? Thank you for the inspiration.
    • Hi Leslie! I've got another post coming up on Friday that has some links to blogs explaining capsules a little more. Some of the blouses in my winter capsule can be versatile in other seasons but they definitely are best in fall/winter. I always kept all of my pieces in one closet but I removed my spring/summer things so they don't distract me. For me, there was just too much! I am finding I like it better this way and I never thought I would. Glad you stopped by and were inspired!
  • Part of my problem with the capsule is the seasonal thing. Honestly, it's cold enough for sweaters/vest/flannels for about six months. But if I only had a few, I'd get bored during that time. I'm really enjoying reading about your journey!
  • I'm really excited to see how this goes for you! I think if I had any extra mental energy these days I might go in this direction with you but for now I will just live vicariously through you :)
