Let’s Take the Plunge!

Are you ready to take the plunge? The closet purging plunge that is! Maybe just reducing or editing would be better words for you but for me it was more of a purge. And yes, you can do this!

Welcome to Closet Purging 101!

Now, I admit it right off the bat, I do not know all there is to a complete closet purging {or reducing or editing}. I think there are quite a few variables involved. Just as we are all individuals, I think that creates the license to be okay with your own individual way to go about it.

For me, it did not come about as January 1st rolled around and I felt pressure to start the new year with everything perfectly in order. Instead it happened more organically. It was a process that took shape over time. It really started when I began to feel uncomfortable in some outfits I was wearing. I was feeling “not me”, which was the BIG red flag. Somewhere from that point I just stood in my closet and stared at my clothes. I decided there were lots of things I just didn’t really like but I had purchased them on a whim or by the suggestion of someone else.

Next, I realized I just had too much and that was creating problems for me to actually put on the things I loved. I felt I should wear all of those pieces but I didn’t even like many of them. I remembered my summer of just a few pairs shoes. That worked so well that I began to apply that principle to my clothes. Less is more and actually better.

I started sorting out what I really didn’t like and what just wasn’t me and magically that led to learning what is me. I quickly realized I totally love casual wear with a hint of menswear, which explains why certain colors and styles didn’t gel with me. Those “non-me” pieces were quickly removed from hangers and placed in bags to resell or giveaway. I followed this method with blouses, tees, sweaters, pants, shoes and even accessories. I started this in the fall and committed to focus on my fall/winter wardrobe so it would be fresh and I would thus enjoy those seasons. It’s totally working, friends!

If you’re interested in reducing the side of your closet you could try these ideas {I bet you already this stuff}:

    • Let go of what’s out of date or doesn’t fit any longer.
    • Get rid of anything stained or with holes.
    • Reduce seasonal - either before or after the season.
    • Reduce by category - tops, sweaters, pants, etc.
    • Limit pieces in each color and/or style - Who needs multiples, right? My hand is raised in “I do” need multiples of styles and colors and that has been my biggest clothing problems for years! I do not want to admit how many black cardigans I owned last January. Now I have only one!
    • Take everything out and sort through piece by piece deciding what to keep and let go.
    • Need some inspiration? I created a board on Pinterest with ideas as well.

Regardless of what you keep, take a few extra moments to organize as you go. One example is to organize blouses by color and sleeve length. Through my purging process I decided to remove my spring and summer tops so I could have less in my closet. I also wanted something new to look forward to wearing rather than feeling pressured to wear everything hanging in that little lovely favorite room I call my closet.

At the end of the day, I have just come to realize that less is better and less is more. Too much clothing in my closet just becomes clutter. I want to enjoy wearing what I own and love what I wear. Reducing has helped me on that journey.

Are you ready to take the plunge? Why or why not?

      Sarah--we CAN do this!!!
  • Yes, girl! I cleaned mine out when i was putting maternity clothes up. It feels great to start out with a fresh closet.
    • Yay! It is always great to have a fresh start. Are you thinking about working on a capsule wardrobe or what are your style plans for this season?
  • I need to do a closet purge. I think it would make my husband the happiest. I am a bit of a clothes hoarder and collector of multiple colors of the same thing. Lisa Daily Style Finds
    • I have to honest here, I'm glad I got rid of multiples! Having less is becoming so much better for my style wise.

I am SOOOOO ready! I have been slowly working on this since August. I have been surprised about how emotional the process has been! I bought 2 boxes of wooden hangers (48 hangers) and I decided I would try and work at this being my number of clothing pieces. Next I took EVERYTHING out of my closet. I examined each piece and asked myself (1) Do I love it? (2) Does it fit and flatter? (3) Is it in season? (4) Can I wear it at least 3 different outfits? If I answered yes to all of these, it earned a place in my closet. With the rest of the clothes, I made a (1) Give away or sell pile, (2) an off season pile, and (3) an "I'm not sure" pile. I have made a couple trips to Goodwill. I've stored off season clothing in another closet, and I've stored the "I'm not sure" pieces in that closet as well. I'm allowing myself to dip into the "I'm not sure" store if I want to. A couple of those things have earned their way into my capsule and a couple of capsule items have been relegated to the "I'm not sure" closet. Little by little, I'm figuring this out. Your pinterest board has some great tips!
    • You totally have this, Saxon! What you described here is very similar to the process I went through and am still going through. It is an emotional and long process but I am feeling the freedom of it already and that is so good. I think wooden hangers helped me look at my clothing as something that had more value. Thanks for sharing this!

I downsized to a capsule wardrobe for 2 seasons, and then summer vacation came and I got sloppy. By fall I was back to staring at my closet feeling like I had nothing to wear. I just spent a couple days of my Christmas vacation to get back on track, and I'm as happy as can be with my 37 items!
    • 37 pieces! I am impressed! I bet you can create so much with + not feel overwhelmed by so many clothes. Thanks for your input. It's very encouraging!

I did this a little over the break!! I have a huge bag ready to be donated!! But I could stand to lose a few more things!! I'm in!!
    • Yay! This will be so fun with friends! Hope getting back to work is going okay. I know it's hard to go back in January. I always loved going back to school in August but January was super hard.

Oh my dear Carrie, you are speaking to me with this post!!! I'm excited to follow your journey and begin my own!
    • Thank you, Denise! I appreciate your support in this mission. We can do this together, friend!
  • i got rid of quite a few things over the holiday, and I'm on a mission to get rid of more. Great suggestions for purging - I linked this post to my blog tomorrow!
    • Thank you, friend! Honestly, I'm finding I enjoy getting dressed with less pieces because I think I'm more creative and less overwhelmed. Thanks for linking this post!
  • I did this when I did my closet makeover! Feels great to pare things to what I love instead of just what I have.
    • Less is more, isn't it? I am loving having less but I still quite a bit! Thanks for stopping by.
  • I can sit here and think of things I have "just because" but haven't worn in years, or liked when I bought them but not so much now. I need to get on this closet purging business over the long MLK weekend.
  • I've had an empty thredUP bag in my closet for months and you know what I'm going to do RIGHT NOW? Go put some things in it! I may not have time at the moment for a total closet re-haul but I CAN do a little bit at a time!
